Happy birthday, May baby! Your very special birthstone is the Emerald. It’s one of the 4 most precious stones in the world currently, and needs little introduction.
It’s also a lovely month to be born in – what with it being Spring in the Northern hemisphere, far away enough from any major holidays (New Year, Christmas, Chinese New Year etc.) that people can give you their undivided attention… And shower you with gifts! We jest, of course, but it is a wonderful, earthy, blossoming time to celebrate a birthday in.
“All the green of nature is concentrated within the Emerald.” – St. Hildegard of Bingen
You’re probably familiar with the Emerald’s deep, alluring green, sparkling with enigma and old-world charm. It takes an elegant, refined person to wear the Emerald, and we’re sure you – born in the month of May – already fit in the bill.
(If you’re shopping for a fellow May baby, and Emerald’s not quite their thing, we recommend the Earthly Jolie to channel the same earthy, nature-vibes that will still do the trick. It’s pleasing to the eye and soothing to the soul – highly recommended!)
More about the Emerald
The word ‘Emerald’ itself is derived from the word smaragdus, meaning green in Greek, and was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia. Exquisite, high-quality emerald is very rare, so many manufacturers make use of different treatments to improve clarity. (source)
Emerald’s more mystical/metaphysical properties…
The Emerald is linked to the heart, and revered for its heart-opening properties. Ancient peoples regarded it as a sacred, believing it to house a goddess (Incans).
If you’re familiar with the chakra system, which is a system that describes the 7 energy centers within our bodies, this gemstone relates directly to the Heart chakra (4th chakra). Wearing or a keeping an Emerald close to your body can balance this chakra:
“It regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace and what we resist, giving us the balancing ability to be ourselves within the environment. When the Heart Chakra is out of balance we may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become critical of the little foibles of others. We may find ourselves having inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli.” (source)
By using a green-colored crystal to resolve blockages and to balance the heart chakra, it is believed that you can understand your own needs and emotions more clearly. One can then deal with the ebbs and flows of emotional relationships, understand their cyclic nature, and accept the changes.
The Emerald is an incredibly powerful and beautiful stone – definitely worthy of anyone born in May!
