Pachira aquatica grows between 15 and 20 meters tall. In mature trees, the crown is rounded and bushy and has whorled branching (especially when young). With 5–11 leaflets, the leaves are palmate. The spectacular powderpuff flowers have white to yellowish-orange filaments with pink tips on single, cylindrical, upright flower buds that are 20 to 30 cm long.
