WoW Presents: Karen's WonderFULL Story

WoW Presents: Karen's WonderFULL Story

One of our favourite things that we get to do, is to meet new people in the planting community. While Karen & Peng from Little Big Garden have been friends and around the the gardening community for some years now, it was wonderfull to connect with them through Fendi from Littlebotany

Little Big Garden is known to be one of the OGs of the Kokedama scene in Singapore. Having conducted 2 wildly popular sessions of edible Kokedama workshops with us over WoW 2023 #FeedWithLove – we steal some of Karen's time to talk about growing edibles and eating healthy!

Karen, you have been friends and business partners with Peng before Little Big Garden! How did you guys end up starting your own plant boutique?

Prior to Little Big Garden, we already enjoyed gardening and plants for a long time as a hobby. We were then growing edibles in our own homes. Little home experiments with plants led to pop-ups where the response was positive, before Little Big Garden became a full fledged business.

Oh! We love that you are planting your own greens! What kind of learnings do you take away from growing your own edibles in Singapore?

Because our work immerses us in so many varieties of plants, I guess it comes naturally to be aware of eating balanced meals. Plus we love vegetables. I would say one of my all-time favourites is thunder tea rice.
What kind of challenges do you face with growing your own greens?
Growing your own edibles makes you highly aware that it takes a lot of effort to grow your own food so we always try not to waste food. In Singapore, you’re always facing challenges like lack of space, adequate sunlight and pests. Because our work immerses us in so many varieties of plants, I guess it comes naturally to be aware of eating balanced meals. Plus we love vegetables. I would say one of my all-time favourites is thunder tea rice.
What would you advise for people who are just starting on their healthy-eating journey?
Moderation is key. Eat a hearty breakfast, you can indulge in lunch but eat a really light dinner. If you are trying to lose weight, half your portions for dinner and eat by 7pm.
As with planting and gardening, a lot of things in life are best served in moderation. It's a phrase we hear over and over again, from exercising, eating and planting. Find the right balance for YOU and for YOUR lifestyle is key.
There's no one way that works for everyone, but what's best is when you don't deprive yourself of foods that make you happy. Instead, make sure you balance out what you take. If you have a sinful lunch, then have a light & simple dinner. Doing brunch with your besties? Plan a lighter lunch or have an earlier dinner.
Did you know? That at Lifestyle@SingSeeSoon, we plan our community gatherings around a balanced day – always starting with a physical activity like yoga or beatfit or zumba, we try to include some healthy eats and a balance of education and fun!
